Are Flea Infestations All Year Round?

Flea infestations are particularly troublesome for homeowners. These pests are extremely irritating and cause an enormous nuisance. What’s more, they are also extremely difficult to get rid of. That being said, at some point most adult insects do seem to subside. For example, wasps usually die off in winter. But is this the case with fleas? Do they eventually go away, or is this something you have to worry about year-round?

Untreated flea infestations can last indefinitely

Unfortunately, flea infestations do not go away with the changing seasons. This is especially true if the fleas have embedded themselves deeply in your home. In the wild, fleas do have periods of lessened activity. Flea season generally runs from mid-spring to mid-autumn. After this, it gets colder, and fleas lay their eggs and the adults die out.

This is not something that happens when fleas are in the home. This is because fleas have access to food, shelter, and, with the benefit of central heating, they have plenty of warmth. For this reason, they are able to survive the cold weather, continue breeding, and carry on making your life a misery. You will need a comprehensive strategy to effectively get rid of fleas.

What this means is that you cannot ignore fleas

When it comes to domestic flea infestations, you can’t simply hope the problem will go away. It’s critical that you take care of the issue before it gets worse. Start by focusing on your pets, as they are mainly affected by fleas. Treat your pets with anti-flea products from your local veterinary practice and ask them for any further advice in terms of prevention.

Next, thoroughly vacuum the inside of your home. Go over every inch of your house, including carpets and furniture, plus curtains too. Also hoover soft furnishings like pillows. If you have blankets in your lounge, then vacuum those as well. Also, once you’ve finished vacuuming, clean out your hoover bag and dispose of this immediately in a sealed Ziplock bag. Something else that is also a good idea, is having your home steam cleaned. Steam cleaning furniture and carpets will go a long way towards destroying fleas and their eggs.

Finally, wash all bedding like sheets and duvet covers. Also wash all pet bedding thoroughly. If none of this helps, and there’s a good chance it won’t, then call in an exterminator like Diamond that offers flea control in London. We can help with advanced pest removal methods to destroy these pests. Our treatment programmes are perfect for homeowners who want to get rid of flea infestations fast and thoroughly.
