As temperatures drop, many people assume insect activity stops completely. While autumn and winter temperatures slow pests down, these cool seasons do not remove the risk. Where insects go during colder months
Are insects a problem when conditions turn cold? The answer depends on the species. Many types enter diapause, which is a form of insect dormancy that helps them conserve energy. Others hide in protected spaces such as wall voids, lofts, basements or behind skirting boards. Bed bugs remain active indoors all year because they rely on human hosts.

Cockroaches also thrive in heated buildings and will move closer to boilers and pipe runs when it is chilly. Even ants, which seem to vanish in autumn, may remain deep in wall cavities, waiting to re-emerge when temperatures rise.

Another factor is human behaviour. Windows stay closed for longer periods, which reduces ventilation and creates the still indoor environments some insects prefer. People also store more clothing and blankets during winter, which can unintentionally provide extra food sources for pests such as clothes moths. These seasonal changes mean that insects are a problem in cold weather, as winter conditions tilt the environment in their favour.
