Is The UK Bed Bug Outbreak Getting Worse?

In recent months, you may have heard about the so-called UK bed bug outbreak. It all started with news stories from France, which reported a major infestation in places like Paris. Many news outlets also reported that these bed bugs would soon make their way to the UK. But has any of this actually materialised? Are we seeing an outbreak of bed bugs, or was it all just alarmist reporting.

Is there actually a significant UK bed bug outbreak?

As pest controllers, we can tell you that there isn’t really a massive UK bed bug outbreak as a whole, although in London there is probably a higher chance of picking them up from public places. The UK bed bug problem is as bad as it’s always been. Basically, the situation isn’t getting markedly worse, but at the same time it’s not getting any better. The fact is, that people in the UK will always have to deal with these pests.

Unfortunately, it’s fairly unlikely that you will go through life without experiencing these pests and needing London bed bug control at least once. This is why it’s so important that you’re aware of the problem. At the same time, you should take steps to prevent yourself from becoming a victim to bed bugs. This is especially true if you’re travelling to a place like France, which may have a high incidence of bed bugs. You see, the way that many people get these pests is through overseas travel.

Protect yourself from bringing bed bugs from France

No matter where you’re staying, first make sure that the room is free of bed bugs. Strip the bed and carefully inspect every seam and fold of the mattress. Check the bedding as well, along with the area beneath and around the bed. Look for bed bugs, but also look for their symptoms. This includes shed skin, plus red and brown spots. If you spot any of these signs, then ask the hotel for another room.

You should also keep your clothing sealed in plastic bags. This prevents holiday bed bugs from climbing onto clothing and being transported back home. You may also want to keep your luggage in the bathroom. Bed bugs do not often enter this room, and this helps prevent them from getting into your suitcase.

When you return home, do not simply unpack your luggage. Remember, there could still be bed bugs hiding in your luggage. The best option is to unpack your clothes away from your bedroom. Take out the things you need and check them carefully.

Next, wash and tumble dry each item of clothing at a high heat for about 90 minutes. Finally, check every inch of your suitcase and belongings. Even electrical items can get bed bugs in them. You may also want to leave it outside for a period of time, or in your garage. This will deter any remaining bugs from coming inside. It also means you won’t fall victim to your own personal UK bed bug outbreak!
