They usually enter the home by catching a ride on humans. They most often do this by crawling onto your clothing, or into bags or other items you’re carrying.

Simple steps to avoid bringing bed bugs home

In the case of your children, bed bugs may crawl into their rucksacks or onto clothing. What this means is that these items need to be deal with as soon as your child returns from a sleepover, or from school if you know an infestation is going around.

The first and most obvious thing to do is have the kids change clothes when they get in. The next step would be to simply throw your child’s clothing into the washing machine or tumble dryer. Wash or dry the clothing for at least 30 minutes at high heat. This is enough to kill any bed bugs which may be present.

If they have picked up bed bugs, you may be lucky enough to spot them by inspecting bags and other items. You can use a strong torch to check carefully for signs of the insects.
