Tips On How To Deter Mice In The House

Having mice in your house is extremely common in the UK.  And who can blame these creatures for taking up residence? When you don’t do everything in your power to deter mice, your home provides a source of food and nesting materials. It also supplies a warm and safe environment, free from predators. There are plenty of nooks and crannies, meaning places to nest and to hide.

Can you stop mice from making your home their home in the first place? Well, there are a few things you can do to make this less likely, although they are not guaranteed to work. One of these is to keep your home clean and clutter free. If the environment is not very attractive to them, they will go elsewhere.

The kitchen area is of particular importance as small morsels of food can easily drop behind things, or end up underneath cabinets and appliances. Having a cat or a dog may prove useful to deter mice, although we do see cases where ownership of pets has been ineffective.

Are there any devices that will deter mice?

There are several devices for sale that claim to deter mice. Some types are more effective than others. The cheapest device is a sonic repellent. Sadly, these are not much use. They emit a sound at a frequency that humans do not hear, which irritates rodents. They may keep mice away from a very small area that the device is pointed towards, but mice can simply use another part of the room.

On the other hand, electromagnetic devices can work to deter mice from settling in the first place, and get rid of them if they are present. Electrical pulses are sent into the wiring of your house, creating an electromagnetic field in the walls, which rodents do not like. However, like many other DIY mouse control methods, these do not always work.

Can I use traps to stop mice?

If you find that these pests have entered your home, and you haven’t managed to deter mice, what can you do? One of the reasons people want to get rid of mice is because they breed at an alarming rate. Most people start with traps. There are a number of types on the market.

Some people prefer live tamper proof traps. The mouse needs to go inside a tube in order to trigger a mechanism that closes the trap. There is a knack to using them. Start by placing food at the entrance to the trap. If this morsel disappears, next place the food further inside. Once this has been eaten, place the food all the way in. A little patience will pay off.

When you catch a mouse in a live trap, don’t release it in your garden – it can find its way back back. Take it further away from your home and put it into undergrowth.

If you have tried these methods for winter or autumn mice, but still have mice, you can give Diamond mouse control in London a call. Sometimes professional help is needed to rid your home of these tenacious creatures.
