Is It A German Or Oriental Cockroach?

According to scientists, there are more than 4000 species of cockroaches. Many of these species are harmless, and in many places around the world are not considered to be pests. Then you have what’s known as German and Oriental cockroaches. These species are extremely harmful and can become a serious nuisance. When attempting to eliminate these pests, it is useful to know which species you have. This is important because it will determine the cockroach pest control methods used in treating them. Read on to learn if you are dealing with a German or Oriental cockroach infestation.

German or Oriental cockroach: what’s in your home?

When figuring out if you have a German or Oriental cockroach infestation, there certain things you can look out for. To start with, once you spot a cockroach infestation, find out where the insects are living. German cockroaches enjoy warmer areas which are slightly humid or damp. Oriental cockroaches are sometimes known as water bugs. This is because they prefer areas that are wetter and also darker. For example, you may find these cockroaches beneath your kitchen sink.

The biggest issue with German cockroaches is that these can spread disease. This includes gastroenteritis, which results in food poisoning, diarrhea and dysentery. Oriental cockroaches also spread diseases and bacteria. Examples of these are E. Coli and salmonella. These cockroaches can also trigger reactions in people with allergies and may even cause asthma attacks.

Something else to look at are the colour of the pests. Oriental cockroaches are darker and shinry, while German cockroaches have a light brown colouring. They also have their own unique shape, as you can see in the accompanying images. Despite their individual characteristics, each of these species of cockroaches can cause a number of problems in your home or business.

Getting rid of a cockroach infestation can be difficult

The reason cockroaches are so hard to kill is partly because they breed at an incredible pace. They are also small and can fit into the tiniest crack or crevice. What this means is that DIY pest control rarely works. Even if you destroy the cockroaches themselves, their eggs are often left behind, and the cycle begins again.

Both German and Oriental cockroaches are incredibly hardy insects. They can withstand even the harshest of over-the-counter poisons, to the point of developing immunity to them. Cockroaches can survive in the hottest and coldest of conditions. They are even said to be able to resist the devastation of a nuclear attack.

This is why it’s always better to hire a professional London pest control company. We use a number of effective techniques to kill these pests. These include physical removal of the insects themselves, spraying pesticides, and also sealing up cracks and holes where they may enter. This means that cockroaches cannot get back in and the problem is usually solved for good.
