Pests That May Point To A Damp Problem

Believe it or not, pests do occasionally have their uses. For example, if you start getting pests in your home it could point towards a deeper problem. One of these problems is damp. Indeed, there are many pests that indicate the possible presence of a damp problem in your home. In this post we will look at some of them.

These insects may mean a damp problem in your home

What you have to understand about pests is that they need water to survive. This is why pests are usually attracted to places in which there is a supply. The reason why is because these pests evolved in hot and humid environments and thrive in damp places. If it gets too dry their bodies dry out and they die. This is known as desiccation.

The other thing about these pests is that many of them need a moist environment to breed. The fact is that if you begin seeing certain insects it means there is some kind of excess water and moisture in your home. It could also mean that you have a damp problem.

So, what pests are we talking about here? Well, probably the most important insects you have to watch out for are cockroaches. These pests are highly attracted to moist areas that are unusually wet. Their preferred living environment is somewhere that is constantly wet. This is why you often find cockroaches in the cupboards under your sink. The other reason is because cockroaches feed on the mould and mildew that forms in a damp environment.

Other concerns to consider if you have a damp problem

Having a damp property also causes parts of your house to rot and break down. A good example of this is the integrity of things made out of wood. The constant presence of moisture will eventually cause wood to rot.

Another insect that is a big indicator of damp is an invasion of silverfish. These pests need an enormous amount of humidity to survive. In fact, they can only live in places where the humidity is above 70%. This is why you usually find them in places like your bathroom, or laundry room.

Along with this you should also watch out for centipedes, ants and drain flies. Drain flies are an especially big sign. These pests feed on rotting organic material, and the presence of this could indicate damp. Ultimately, it comes down to this. Are you seeing the above pests in increased numbers? If you’ve taken care of everything else that might attract pests, then it could mean there is a deeper problem, namely damp.
