Stop Those Barbeque Summer Insects

The weather is sizzling, and lockdown is easing even more. This means bringing out the barbeque out of retirement and having friends round (at a social distance, of course). Having to deal with summer insects during your get-together is no fun, however. No one minds the occasional wasp or fly, but there are times when these pests can become a real problem. In the warm weather, outdoor pests can ruin picnics and barbeque events.

Firstly, you should scrub your grill before using it. This especially important if your grill spent the winter packed away in a garage or shed. If this is the case, it’s possible that cockroaches and other insects may have been living on it.

Why summer insects can ruin barbeques

The main reason why insects spoil outdoor fun is because they are irritating. Think back to a barbeque where you had flies swarming around your head the entire day. Or maybe a wasp or hornet stung you. Or perhaps you had to deal with ants crawling all over your food. Everyone can relate to this and know how horrible it is.

When insects sniff out food outdoors, you can be left picking bugs out of the potato salad. But it gets worse than that. Many summer insects  – such as flies – can cause food poisoning and E-Coli. Both are serious conditions that can give you an upset stomach or diarrhoea. In the case of E-Coli, it can be potentially life threatening. Cockroaches carry diseases like salmonella, which can be transferred to anything cooked on the grill.

So what can you do about summer insects?

The most important thing to consider is keeping your entire barbeque area as clean as possible. Remove food waste as soon as you can, and don’t leave any food uncovered. Put cling film over it or keep it in plastic containers. This will help to flies and other summer insects at bay.

Cockroaches are in the food.

You see, it’s not just the food that attracts summer insects, but the grease and scraps on the grill as well. This grease is like catnip to flies and other insects. They love it! Which is why you need to keep your grill spotless. In fact, you should clean every part of your barbeque both before and after using it.

There are also a number of natural solutions. One of the easiest are citronella candles. These candles have been proven to repel insects like flies and mosquitos. They also create a wonderful ambiance on warm summer evenings. Other candles can do the trick as well. These include lemon, lavender and peppermint scented candles.

Remember, that if you have more than just the odd few pests, you could have a more serious problem. If you have a wasp nest on your property or if a full on ant infestation needs control, seeking professional assistance is probably wise.
